WWL-TV: “Statue of author Walker Percy unveiled in Madisonville”

Walker Percy was arguably one of St. Tammany Parish’s most famous residents, but up until now there were few public tributes to the prize-winning author or his work.

On Thursday, in advance of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the author’s birth, the daughters of Percy, best known for his 1961 novel The Moviegoer, were on hand as a life-sized statue of the author was unveiled at the Madisonville public library.

Walker Percy Sculpture to be Unveiled at Madisonville Branch Library

On Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 10:00 a.m., the Walker Percy Serenity Circle will open to the public with a dedication ceremony at the Madisonville Branch of the St. Tammany Public Library (1123 Main Street, Madisonville). The dedication will include the unveiling of a life-sized bronze statue of Walker Percy by Covington artist Bill Binnings generously underwritten by The Helis Foundation. Nola.com: “Historic New Orleans Collection reception celebrates Helis Foundation art acquisitions”

The Historic New Orleans Collection hosted a reception on Monday (April 4) to recognize a unique partnership it has with The Helis Foundation.

Since 2008, the foundation has acquired art and art objects — such as an 1861 F.H. Hatch Presentation Silver Service and “Creole in a Red Headdress,” c. 1840, oil on canvas, by Jacques Guillaume Lucien Amans — for the collection. The reception was to celebrate this collaboration and to preview a catalogue documenting the foundation’s acquisitions…

New Orleans Museum of Art Acquires Lynda Benglis “Wing” Sculpture

The New Orleans Museum of Art has acquired Wing, a 1970 sculpture by artist Lynda Benglis, with funds provided by The Helis Foundation and additional funds provided by the Frierson Art Purchase Fund. In the 1960s, the Louisiana native shocked the New York art world with her electric-hued sculptures and art installations, whose vibrant colors and free-form compositions ran counter to the more austere minimalist aesthetic of much art of the time. Benglis created these works, which she called “fallen paintings,” by dripping and pouring industrial materials like latex and polyurethane directly on gallery floors or upon armatures installed on museum walls…
