The Advocate: “Restoration of historic paintings begins $5 million renovation”

Art conservationist Darcie Flinn leaned over the stern visage of George Washington, painted by New Orleans artist Edmund Brewster and purchased by the city in 1819.

While she applied special chemicals with a cotton ball Tuesday, a colleague alongside her in the crimson-hued room in Gallier Hall polished a 19th-century brass mantle clock.

These were among the first small touches of a renovation effort expected to cost $5 million and encompass the entire interior of a building that served as New Orleans’ City Hall for a century and still plays a prominent role in Mardi Gras celebrations…

City of New Orleans and 2018 Commission to Begin Interior Restoration of Historic Gallier Hall

Mayor Mitch Landrieu will join members of the New Orleans Tricentennial 2018 Commission’s Gallier Hall Preservation Committee to announce the start of interior restoration work at historic Gallier Hall. This restoration work was made possible by a generous donation from the Helis Foundation. In 2015, the 2018 Commission launched a $5 million dollar private fundraising campaign to support the restoration and preservation of Gallier Hall.

The 2018 Commission’s Gallier Hall Preservation Committee is continuing its fundraising campaign to support the full interior preservation, which includes the restoration of historic paintings and frames, chandeliers and windows located in 12 grand ballrooms…

Sheena Wagstaff, chairwoman of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s modern and contemporary art department, was relatively new on the job in 2013 when Pamela J. Joyner, a prolific art collector and supporter of artists of African descent, invited her on a trip to Washington to visit the studio of the Color Field painter Sam Gilliam.
